Beginning the Journey

Once you have decided that you want to start the adoption process, you will file an application with us and the home study will begin.

Our Director of Adoptions, Ann Woodfork, will work directly with you. Ann, an adoptive mom, has been serving adoptive families for 40 years. She will do your consultation, home study and post placement visit.

Our Adoption Specialist, Ann White, is the birth mother counselor. She has been working in the field for 20 years.

The "Anns" are always available and work to make the whole process go smoothly.

What is a home study?

A home study is a written assessment done by a social worker.  As part of the evaluation you will be asked to fill out an application, provide references, current physical reports, criminal screenings, financial reports, and birth and marriage certificates.  The social worker is assessing your fitness to provide a safe and secure environment for a child and will do this with the documents you provide, meetings with you and a visit to your home.  At the interviews, the worker will ask questions about your background, your relationships with parents and siblings, your marital relationship, parenting experiences, infertility, attitudes toward adoption, characteristics of the child you are requesting such as age, race, health, etc.  The home study is not only to assess you but to educate you to be adoptive parents.

Agencies are not looking for "perfect" families but honest, caring people who are willing to learn and are sensitive to adoption issues.  We see the home study as a joint effort of the agency and family to grow families by adoption.
